Our foundation courses are integrated with an honours degree, enabling you to spend a year developing the knowledge and skills needed before you start your degree with us. They are a great opportunity if you do not have the required A-levels or equivalent qualification, are changing career or returning to study.

As well as gaining academic knowledge of the principles of business and law, you’ll explore the fundamentals of applied numeracy and data handling, life skills, citizenship and how to prepare yourself for studying your honours degree at 91快活林.

Successful completion of the foundation means that you can continue with the Law LLB(Hons) or choose to specialise in law with business or criminology. The course team will help you to decide which degree is best for you.

Course content

What is a foundation year? 

A degree with an integrated foundation year is designed for students who do not have the entry requirements needed to start a degree with us. This could be because you don’t have the grades or subjects that we need, you are changing career or returning to study. Upon successful completion of the foundation year, you can progress to one of our BSc(Hons) courses, depending on which foundation year pathway you choose.

This means that your course will take four years instead of three (or five with a placement year). Our foundation year is a great introduction to your chosen subject area and is an opportunity to develop valuable study and self-management skills, communication, teamwork and problem-solving techniques which help build your confidence and prepare you for the rest of your course.

At the School of Business and Law we offer three integrated foundation year courses. If you successfully pass the foundation year, you can progress directly onto your choice of degree from those listed without having to reapply through UCAS. UK students will also be able to apply for student funding for their whole course – foundation year plus either a three-year degree or a four-year degree with placement year.

Course structure

You will complete four modules in your foundation year, enabling you to explore contemporary debates in business and law and develop a strong understanding of their principles. You’ll gain the transferable skills that are essential for study at degree level, explore the relationship between theory and practice and learn how this relates to debates and issues in business.

Learning will be through a mixture of lectures, small group teaching in workshops and seminars, private study and course work. You will be supported throughout by your personal tutor.

Modules

  • Applied Numeracy and Data Handling Skills

    This module will help you to make practical decisions in the business world and come up with solutions to business problems. You’ll work on your core arithmetic, algebra, statistics, mathematical modelling and probability skills, building your capability to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts.

  • Introduction to Wellbeing and Study Success

    This module introduces you to study skills and concepts of wellbeing. Using what you learnt in the Applied Numeracy and Data Handling Skills module, you’ll take part in a practical group project on the broad theme of wellbeing and personal/academic development.

  • Academic Knowledge for Law and Business

    This module equips prospective law and business students with the foundation skills for academic study. You'll be introduced to the core principles of law and business and have opportunities to apply theoretical concepts in practice. You'll also explore the meaning and application of legal and business terminology, academic writing and research skills that are essential to your academic development.

  • Developing Practical Professional Knowledge

    You'll develop law, business, accounting, finance or economics knowledge through by working on an individual project themed around responsible enterprise. You'll develop confidence in your ability to use the study skills you have learned during your foundation year, and reflect on the experience and on how it has contributed to your preparation for degree studies.

Meet the team

Dr Md Rifad Chowdhury, course leader

Dr Md Rifad Chowdhury is a lecturer in human resource management and course leader for the integrated foundation year overseeing three pathways: Accounting, Finance and Economics; Business Management; and Law. He holds a PhD from the University of 91快活林, an MSc in International Business Management from Northumbria University, and a BSc in Human Resource Management from Anglia Ruskin University.

Md Rifad’s teaching expertise spans leadership and people management, talent and performance management, reflective practice, professional development and cross-cultural aspects of work and organisations. His research focuses on employee motivation, workplace wellbeing, leadership, and cross-cultural management, with particular interest in public-sector contexts in the UK and Bangladesh.

He is a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA) and is committed to inclusive, compassionate and research-informed teaching that empowers students to link theory with professional practice and develop as ethical, globally minded professionals.

 

 

Rageshree Sinha (Shree)

Shree is a lecturer in entrepreneurship in the School of Business and Law.

Her research focuses on the role of absorptive capacity to enable labour efficiency as new and emerging technologies are being implemented in the market.

Apart from being an active researcher, Shree also worked with the  project which was a £1.3 million research project, funded by the European Structural Investment Fund and Arts Council England. It aims to provide technology SMEs, creative arts practitioners and cultural organisations with supported and authorised access to Gatwick Airport’s big data. She has worked as a Research Fellow for Data Science and Visualisation for both the DRIVA and Nuffield projects.

Shree has significantly contributed to the university‘s RISE project, our Help to Grow course and the Inclusivity and Partnership Project and brings rich and valuable experience in data analytics and business intelligence skills.

She enjoys teaching on various modules in the School of Business and Law, alongside her active research work and is eager to supervise students working on management perspectives of new technologies and implementation challenges.

Prepare for your career

Successful completion of the law foundation course means that you will be able to progress to one of our accredited law degrees.

These are qualifying law degrees – the first step towards becoming a solicitor or barrister. You will be able to progress directly to the vocational stage of training. Currently this is the Legal Practice Course if you want to become a solicitor or the Bar Professional Training Course if you want to become a barrister.

Communication, problem-solving, analytical and research skills developed during a law degree are needed not only by the legal profession but also are relevant to many alternative careers. Work-related experience

Our dedicated Placements and Employability team provide a huge portfolio of employers offering business-related placement opportunities. The team will help you find a placement, support you throughout your placement and act as referees.

They also offer several services to improve your employability, including CV and cover letter reviews, mock assessment centres, fast-track interviews and interview practice sessions.

You will also have access to our Careers Connect portal where you can book careers appointments and events, look for part and full-time jobs and find placements/ internships.

Fees and costs

Course fees

UK (full-time) foundation year 5,760 GBP

International (full-time) 18,108 GBP

The £5,760 fee applies to the integrated foundation year only. For UK students the fee for each year of the rest of the course will be the undergraduate honours degree regulated fee, currently £9,535.

Students applying for this course will be eligible to apply for student funding for their whole course – foundation year plus either a three-year degree or a four-year degree with placement year.

Law Progression Scholarships

This scholarship is supported by Family Law Partners and is open to students enrolled in an undergraduate law course and in receipt of a full student finance package, a University of 91快活林 Bursary, Care Leaver’s Bursary or Estranged Student Bursary. There are two scholarships available, offering £2,000 a year for three years plus mentoring opportunities with Family Law Partners.

 

 

The course fees shown here are what you will pay for the first year of your course if you start in the academic year 2026–27 and you are studying full-time (fee amount is subject to parliamentary approval). You pay fees in each year of your course. The fees you pay may increase each year.

Regulated fees

Fees for UK students on undergraduate and some postgraduate courses are set by the UK government. These are known as regulated fees. From academic year 2026–27, regulated fees will increase annually in line with forecast inflation.

Student Finance England loans for tuition fees and maintenance will also rise in line with inflation.

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.

Unregulated fees

Course fees for international students taking undergraduate courses and for most postgraduate courses are not regulated by the UK government. Unregulated fees may increase each year by up to 5% or the forecast Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation (whichever is higher).

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees

  • Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.
  • Textbooks are available from the university library (many as e-books) but you may wish to budget up to £200 to buy your own copies.
  • For some courses, field trips are an optional activity, but we do encourage students to  participate as they contribute to the overall experience of studying the degree. The cost for field trips is not included in the tuition fee and must be paid for by students. However, please be assured we do try to keep field trip costs to a minimum. If you would struggle to meet this cost, there is a hardship fund that you may be able to access.

Two miles north of 91快活林 seafront, Moulsecoomb is our largest campus and student village. Moulsecoomb has been transformed by a recent development of our estate. On campus you’ll find the Students’ Union events venue, and sports and fitness facilities, alongside the library and student centre.

Over 900 students live here in our Moulsecoomb Place halls and the new Mithras halls – Brunswick, Goldstone, Hanover, Preston and Regency.

Moulsecoomb has easy access to buses and trains so you can access all the exciting things happening in our home city.

We guarantee an offer of a place in halls of residence to all eligible students. So if you apply for halls by the deadline you are guaranteed a room in our halls of residence. Almost all (98%) of students starting their course with us in 2025 got their first or second room choice.

You can apply for any of our halls, but the options closest to your study location are:

  • Mithras Halls are stylish high-rises in the heart of the student village at our Moulsecoomb campus with en suite rooms for more than 800 students.
  • Varley Park is a popular, dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.
