Course structure

This course can be studied full-or part-time and consists of taught and research components. To be awarded the MSc you must obtain 180 credits made up of your dissertation at 60 credits, three 20-credit core modules, plus your choice of option modules totalling 60 credits.

You will learn through a combination of lectures, practicals, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork and projects. Core modules will generally include a practical element such as computer work relating to spatial analysis and environmental models or field work for data acquisition.

You will discuss option module choices as you start the course to help you identify your strengths and career aspirations.

Core modules

• Applications in GIS

  Application in GIS will help you develop skills around spatial and digital computing, data handling and problem-solving and use them to identify and examine geographical and wider environmental issues. Case study topics include suitability modelling using raster-based Boolean approaches; data acquisition using GPS and Differential-GPS; and development of GIS-based decision support systems.

• Applied Remote Sensing

  On this module you will learn how to acquire, verify and apply remotely sensed digital image data. Using a hands-on approach, you'll use these skills to investigate geographical and wider environmental issues. The module includes contributions from external contributors from both industry and academia.

• Masters Research Skills and Dissertation

  This substantial dissertation provides you with the opportunity to show your ability to work at masters level as an independent researcher in your chosen area of expertise and develop your own research project. You will demonstrate your broad understanding of the problems involved, your critical thinking, theoretical understanding, methodology and analysis.

Options*

• Industrial Placement Module

  This module consists of an industry-based professional placement of at least 30 weeks, giving you practical work experience related to your MSc degree. You’ll build your employability skills while developing effective workplace practices, reflective learning skills and the ability of evaluate your work critically. You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of how academic theory is applied in professional settings.

• Planning Theory and Practice

  In this module you’ll develop an understanding of alternative views in planning theory so you can generate responses to spatial planning challenges grounded in theory and explore how the core values of planning can be applied in changing circumstances. The module will cover areas including applied rationality; societal guidance; behavioural approaches and communicative practice; radical emancipatory practice; and the concept of individual and collective rights.

• Masters Independent Study

  During this module you will carry out an in-depth investigation of an area of interest from a chosen area of study which falls within the expertise of the staff within the School of Applied Sciences, but is outside the range of material covered by the course. The content of the module depends upon the subject you choose, but will be within the remit of Applied Sciences masters degrees. It should also be different to the subject chosen for your dissertation.

• Communicating Issues in Ecology and Conservation

  In this module you will explore some of the key issues and current global challenges facing biodiversity. You will look at effective strategies for communicating complex ecological and conservation topics to diverse audiences. Each week will focus on a different topic, with emphasis placed on providing an interactive learning experience via journal clubs, student-led seminars and communication skills workshops. 

• Statistical Data Analysis with R

  This module introduces the statistical and programming skills needed for modern data analysis using the R programming language. You’ll learn how to collect, explore and visualise data, understand randomness, and use statistical methods to draw reliable conclusions. You’ll also develop reproducible ways of working and learn how to communicate evidence-based findings clearly.

• Introduction to Geographical Information Systems

  This introductory course to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is for both newcomers to the field and existing practitioners. The module will give you a theoretical and practical understanding of GIS concepts, technical issues and applications using GIS software. You will develop spatial and digital computing, data handling and problem-solving skills and apply these to the identification and examination of geographical and wider environmental issues.

• Environmental and Ecological Impact Assessment

  This module will give you an overview of environmental impact assessment with a focus on ecological impact assessment processes within current legal context and requirements. Using a practical approach, you will take on the role of consultant, undertake a site habitat mapping and evaluate its importance using biodiversity metric tools. You will also produce an industry standard report.

• Key Concepts in Environmental Assessment and Management

  This module gives you a core understanding of contemporary environmental management issues. It will assess the global mega trends driving the need for environmental management, including climate change and biodiversity loss, and cover concepts and policy interventions to address these challenges. The module includes case studies that critically evaluate how environmental management is being addressed from policy through to project level, including waste management, food supply, coastal environmental management, sustainable business models and energy.

• Hydrology and Pollutant Transport

  The Hydrology and Pollutant Transport module introduces you to the fundamentals of surface and groundwater hydrology, focusing on precipitation, evapotranspiration, runoff, discharge, groundwater recharge, groundwater storage and groundwater flow. You will look at pollutant transport dynamics with a focus on pollutants in surface and groundwaters generated by human activities. The module places these topics in the context of the UK water industry structure, international legal and policy frameworks, and integrated catchment management.

• Sustainable Urbanism in Coastal Communities

  In this module you will look at the importance of climate change in the development of local coastal planning policies for energy, housing, transport and employment. You will also work with a local community group or a neighbourhood planning forum on an urban case study in or around 91¿ì»îÁÖ and Hove. You will research, survey and analyse an area to produce effective responses to address the challenges of sustainable growth.

• Spatial Ecology

  This module introduces the importance of spatial data in ecology and conservation. Through lectures, case studies and computer-based practical sessions, you’ll learn quantitative techniques used in spatial ecology. You’ll combine ideas from landscape ecology, conservation planning, animal behaviour and statistical modelling to understand how spatial data can support conservation decisions.

• Applied Taxonomy for Conservation

  This practical module will enhance your ability to identify key taxonomic groups – small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, invertebrate and plants – used in ecological and environmental professions,  while improving your communication skills. You will develop an in-depth understanding and knowledge of a particular taxonomic group and communicate your findings to different audiences.

• Microbiology, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Remediation

  This module provides an integrated approach to the study of key issues in ecotoxicology and environmental microbiology. You will explore a range of contemporary issues concerning biodegradation, food contamination, water quality, environmental health, bioremediation and current environmental legislation. You’ll look at the key concepts around the safe consumption of food and water and the biological responses to environmental stressors and microbial pollution events.

• Statistical Learning

  This module develops advanced, practice-led competence in statistical learning. You will build and evaluate linear models, generalised linear models and survival models, using diagnostics, resampling and information criteria for model selection. A light layer of statistical machine learning is introduced to compare performance and interpretability. Work is software-based and reproducible, culminating in a single applied coursework project with critical reflection on limitations and responsible use.

• Data Analytics with SAS

  You will develop skills and competence in the context of data analytics using statistical analysis system (SAS). The module includes teaching materials developed in collaboration with industry-leading experts in statistics and analytics from the SAS Institute. You will gain essential skills and learn data manipulation, statistical analysis and forecasting techniques using SAS software.

• Carbon Accounting

  This module covers the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GGP) with its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions as well as associated issues such as net-zero, carbon offsets and certification processes. You will use University of 91¿ì»îÁÖ HESA Estates data to demonstrate your understanding of GGP and to explore potential mitigating strategies. You’ll also undertake a short (equivalent of two days) consultancy with small local businesses to understand their emissions.

• Water Quality Assessment and Management

  This module introduces you to water quality assessment and management, teaching you skills related to field and laboratory experimental design, measurement of water quality, data analysis, interpretation of results and reporting to specialist/non-specialist audiences. It will provide you with experience in the management and presentation of large datasets and you will explore the roles of water safety planning, risk assessment, nature-based management and water treatment.

• Environment Placement

  This module will enable you to undertake a structured work-based professional placement. It is designed for you to develop your competencies, skills, network and experiential learning by gaining work-related experience in professionally relevant fields such as the environment and sustainability business sector. This will help support your career development and enhance your experience.

Placement year

To further increase your employability and international experience we offer full-time students starting in September the opportunity to take a placement year. This means that your course will take two years, but you’ll be graduating with work experience.

The year on placement in a role related to your course will allow you to put all that you have learned on your masters into practice, enhancing your career opportunities and giving you practical experience in your area of expertise.

The placement is assessed formatively throughout the year, giving you the chance to reflect on your experience and helping to build your CV.

Work placements are optional, and you’ll arrange your placement with support from our dedicated Placements and Employability team.

We offer a two-year international study visa route to support applications for this course.

The fees listed here are for the first year of full-time study if you start your course in the academic year 2026–27.

You will pay fees for each year of your course. Some fees may increase each year.

UK undergraduate and some postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government and increases will not be more than the maximum amount allowed. Course fees that are not regulated may increase each year by up to 5% or the Consumer Price Index (RPI), whichever is higher.

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.
