Year 1

Modules

• Introduction to Content Creation

  Introduction to Content Creation will help you develop the creative, technical skills required to be a successful content creator. It will position content creation within an industry and academic framework and introduce you to creative tools and apps including photography, film, sound, animation and AI to explore themes of self-identity and digital culture. You will analyse content on different social media platforms, look at narrative structure and moving image and work with smartphone-related moving image software.

• Study Skills in the Creative Industries

  This module is an introduction to study skills in HE practice-based courses at undergraduate level. You will be introduced to fashion communication through object and image analysis and to skills ranging from research to presentation.

• Digital and Web Media Design

  This module will introduce you to the technologies used to create digital and web media products. You will become familiar with technical requirements for graphic design as well as digital acquisition and implementation for various digital media distribution channels. You will produce a multi-format web media product in response to a client brief along with a short video walk-through describing how the product was designed.

• Content Creation for Social Media

  You will look at the ethical debates involved in being a digital citizen and explore the link between social media platforms and content creation. You will be introduced to the roles that digital community building and citizenship plays in informing creative outcomes. This practice-based module will encourage you to creatively examine the relationship between algorithms, communities and creativity using photography, moving image or sound in conjunction with a social media platform.

• Introduction to Visual Promotion

  This module introduces you to visual promotion and how it is shaped by social and cultural influences. You’ll look at why fashion trends matter, how fashion forecasting works, and how new and emerging technologies are changing the way fashion is promoted. You will also get to explore shops in London and 91¿ì»îÁÖ, research current fashion trends and understand the importance of being a zeitgeist in fashion communication.

• Understanding Audiences: Theory and Context

  In this module you will examine the role and characteristics of media consumption in the twenty-first century and the relationship that exists between audiences, texts and technologies of production, distribution and reception. You will examine a range of theories and research methods by studying real-world media organisations and their audiences, and as a practical exercise you’ll design and pitch a cross-media marketing campaign for a targeted audience demographic.

Year 2 

Modules

• Content Creation – Live Project

  Having built up content creation technical skills, it is now time to test these for a client/organisation by working on a live brief based within the university or with an industry partner. You will learn the skills needed to work collaboratively and identify a client/organisation’s needs, define and agree on visual language and develop, communicate and create appropriate outcomes in line with a chosen specialism, for example AI- or photography-based content, short-form film, moving image or podcast.

• Podcasting

  This introduction to podcasting and audio storytelling (both factual and fictional) will explore the major development podcasting represents in the history of audio media and how important story structures are to the form. As well as analysing texts from this emerging media form, you will learn audio production, presentational and journalistic research skills so you can produce a short-form factual piece of your own.

• Creative Enterprise in the Community

  Through this module, you will learn and develop a broad range of skills that are required in a variety of business contexts within creative industries. The aim is to develop your understanding of a variety of contemporary business models, with an emphasis on sustainable, responsible and ethical practice.

• Developing a Content Creation Portfolio

  This module will prepare you for your placement opportunity in your final year by introducing ways to present and engage clients and organisations with your work. It builds on content creation media skills and introduces industry opportunities. Through the module you will develop your ability to create, curate and manage a diverse content portfolio and will gain practical experience in content production and portfolio presentation. You will become a resilient, aware and ethical user of social media platforms in a professional context.

• Promotional Video Production

  This module will provide you with firm understanding of promotional media formats. You will critically analyse case studies and take part in a series of workshops focused on producing promotional media content. Throughout the module you will apply relevant concepts and theories to create content and progress your ideas through development meetings.

• Social Media for Activist and Community Groups

  In this module you will learn how social networking offers new possibilities for activist and non-profit groups. You will devise a social media strategy for a partner organisation and develop graphic and/or audiovisual material to accompany this. You’ll present your work to the organisation and critically reflect on social media practices across different platforms, focusing on the potential and limitations of using this technology for social good.

Placements 

Spend a year on placement

Gain valuable experience and earn money during an optional placement year following year 2. You’ll return to the final year of your degree with added confidence, additional real-world experience and valuable contacts. 

A placement year gives you the chance to work with established professionals in design studios, galleries, film sets, music labels, creative agencies, newsrooms and many other environments. You’ll be able to get an insight into creative workflows and come away with a portfolio filled with real-world projects that will stand out in a competitive job market.  

It can also help you discover your creative direction and passion for a particular area of work, helping you grow artistically as well as professionally.   

Our dedicated Placements and Employability team will support you in getting a placement that suits your interests and career goals by helping you with your CV and cover letter writing, applications, online testing and more. Plus, they’ll provide support and guidance when you’re on placement and make sure that everything is going well. 

Other placement opportunities

In your final year, the Professional Practice module will take you out of the classroom and into a media or related work environment in which you’ll spend at least two weeks.

Our employability hub will work with you to find a placement that meets your career aspirations and we’ll support you leading up to and throughout the placement.

Final year 

The second half of your final year will be dedicated to a ten-week live project. You will develop an innovative media idea and run and evaluate the project in partnership with an external organisation of your choosing.

Modules

• Content Creation Futures

  This module explores a comprehensive range of skills needed to successfully undertake a project. You will study the fundamentals of creating effective proposals, explore research methods and learn how to generate and refine project ideas for specific audiences and industries. Project planning is also a key focus, and you will learn how to organise and manage your project efficiently. The module emphasises presentation skills and professional practice, ensuring you can effectively communicate your project ideas and findings.

• Digital Media Marketing and Innovation

  This module introduces you to key practical aspects of digital media marketing within the context of the technological and business innovations that are driving change across the digital landscape. It will provide you with an understanding of search engine optimization (SEO) and social media marketing and an appreciation of how digital innovations are shaping the marketing sector.

• Content Creation – Final Major Project

  The Content Creation Final Major Project gives you the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills to a self-directed project which demonstrates your ability to articulate your creative process and strategic decisions. You will produce a detailed proposal outlining your objectives, target audience, content strategy and production plan. You’ll then create your content using advanced production techniques to ensure high standards of quality and professionalism. Throughout the module you will present your work for peer and tutor review, using feedback to refine and improve your project. 

• Professional Portfolio

  This module marks the culmination of your studies and as such is self-initiated and self-directed. You will be supported throughout by academic and technical teams to produce a professional, industry-ready portfolio in both analogue and digital formats. The portfolio outcomes should be informed and underpinned by extensive experimentation and consolidated research.

• Professional Practice

  Giving you the opportunity to develop as a reflective practitioner, this module will enhance your professional practice. It will involve you preparing for and undertaking a work placement within journalism or a related profession. You will demonstrate the critical and reflective attributes required for self-evaluation and personal improvement with an analysis of your placement experience.

Facilities 

You will be learning at both City and Moulsecoomb campuses, benefitting from the excellent resources on both sites. You will have access to equipment including:

• digital and analogue stills equipment, including DSLRs and a range of lenses
• darkrooms and processing rooms
• video recording equipment – from Canon DSLRs to Blackmagic cameras – in a dedicated TV studio 
• audio recording kit and facilities, including bookable sound/radio booths 
• video editing suites, including Mac and PC computers with specialist software.

Emma Collins

Emma is a published crafts designer, author, content creator and copywriter. She has significant experience of creating and developing online communities and understands the secrets of content marketing and instagram. She has a utilitarian approach to her research which centres around sustainability, handmaking and communities and the power to communicate through visual narratives. 

Mark Wells

Mark is an expert on digital technology and design. His research is based around questioning and self-awareness of our relationship, experience and understanding of the physical environment. He also teaches on our Fashion Communication with Business Studies BA(Hons).

Course fees

The course fees shown here are what you will pay for the first year of your course if you start in the academic year 2026–27 and you are studying full-time (fee amount is subject to parliamentary approval). You pay fees in each year of your course. The fees you pay may increase each year.

Regulated fees

Fees for UK students on undergraduate and some postgraduate courses are set by the UK government. These are known as regulated fees. From academic year 2026–27, regulated fees will increase annually in line with forecast inflation.

Student Finance England loans for tuition fees and maintenance will also rise in line with inflation.

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.

Unregulated fees

Course fees for international students taking undergraduate courses and for most postgraduate courses are not regulated by the UK government. Unregulated fees may increase each year by up to 5% or the forecast Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation (whichever is higher).
