Intro

This course has been developed in conjunction with the ACCA to meet the requirements of both a Diploma in Professional Studies in Accounting and the ACCA Applied Skills syllabus.

As an accredited programme with the ACCA, on completion you'll be able to apply to the ACCA for exemptions from their Applied level papers. You'll also be eligible to progress onto the Accounting MSc/PGDip course.

You'll study a broad range of subjects including financial accounting, management accounting, financial management, taxation, auditing and law.

This course is offered on a part-time (over two years) and full-time basis (over 9 months). The part-time study option is available to UK (home) applicants only.

Entry requirements

ACCA qualifications
You must gain ACCA exemptions or passes for the Applied Knowledge Papers (formerly papers F1-F3) as a minimum to be eligible to apply for the Diploma in Professional Studies in Accounting.

We do not teach the Applied Knowledge Papers. However, the ACCA grant exemptions if you have a relevant degree or professional qualification. To find out whether you are exempt check the ACCA website.

GCSE (minimum grade C or grade 4)
At least three subjects including English language and maths or a science.

You will need to provide documentary evidence from the ACCA that you have passed, at a minimum*, the Applied Knowledge papers (formerly F1-F3) or have gained ACCA exemption from the Knowledge Papers stage.

*If you hold more passes/exemptions than the Applied Knowledge papers (formerly F1-F3), email SBL-office@brighton.ac.uk for more information.

English language requirements
IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each element. Find out more about the other English qualifications that we accept.

ACCA student membership
You need to be a current registered student of the ACCA. It is advisable to apply for membership as soon as possible, since the process of obtaining membership takes much longer between September and December. Membership brings a number of advantages, including a subscription to Student Accountant magazine and practical online support.

Course content

Course structure

The Applied Skills level of study comprises six modules, with three modules running in each of the two semesters during the academic year.

Students studying on a full-time basis will study three modules in each semester with exam assessments at the end of each semester.

Students studying on a part-time basis will study three modules each year (two modules in one semester and one module in the other semester).

ACCA syllabus mapping

We have designed the university awards to run alongside the ACCA qualifications. The Diploma in Professional Studies in Accounting follows the ACCA’s Applied Skills stage papers. Upon completion of this you will gain a diploma and become part-qualified.

You are then eligible to progress onto the Masters and the ACCA Strategic Professional stage syllabus.

You will follow the ACCA’s Applied Skills syllabus for the Diploma in Professional Studies in Accounting qualification and, on completion of the course, will be able to apply to ACCA for exemptions from Applied Skills papers (formerly papers F4 to F9 inclusive).

Assessment involves both coursework and exams. We offer a high level of student support from a small and committed course team, and aim to keep class sizes below 30 students.

Our programme has multiple entry and exit points depending on how many ACCA papers you have passed, or hold exemptions from.

Course leader

Ali Hepburn

Ali is the course leader on our ACCA Professional Accountancy programmes. Her teaching specialism is audit and assurance.

She is a Fellow Chartered Accountant, Business Finance Professional and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Before joining the University of 91快活林 in 2021, Ali worked in audit at PwC for 12 years.

In addition to audit, Ali's interests include business ethics, and equality, diversity and inclusion in the accounting sector.

Registration to the ACCA is not included in the university tuition fees.

ACCA exam or exemption fees are applicable and will need to be paid directly to the ACCA. Contact them for further details, on 0141 5822000.

The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2024–25.

Further tuition fees are payable for each year of study and are subject to an annual increase of no more than 5% or RPI (whichever is the greater). The annual increase for UK students, who are subject to regulated fees, will increase no more than the statutory maximum fee.

The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full-time or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

What's included

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. A summary of the costs that are included and any extras that you may be expected to pay while studying a course in the School of Business and Law in the 2022–23 academic year are listed here.

Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.
Textbooks are available from the university library (many as e-books) but you may wish to budget up to £200 to buy your own copies.
For the International Tourism Management BSc, International Tourism Management with Marketing BSc, International Event Management BSc, and International Event Management with Marketing BSc, field trips are an optional activity, but we do strongly advise participation as they contribute to the overall experience of studying this degree. The cost for field trips is not included in the tuition fee and must be paid for by students, however please be assured we do try to keep field trip costs to a minimum and don't anticipate the total cost of a few field trips each year to exceed £30. If you would struggle to meet this cost, there is a hardship fund that you may be able to access.

Mithras Halls are stylish new high-rises in the heart of the student village at our revitalised Moulsecoomb campus with ensuite rooms for more than 800 students.
Varley Park is a popular dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.
