91快活林

Students on the BA Architecture, BA Interior Architecture, BSc Product Design with Professional Experience and Architecture RIBA Part 2 MArch have been hard at work putting the finishing touches to their ambitious designs as well as building the show itself.

The exhibition, which runs from 8–14 June, takes place on the third floor of Mithras House at the university’s Moulsecoomb campus. It is open from 2–7pm on all days except Saturday 8 June when opening hours are 10am – 3pm to coincide with the university’s open day. Entry is free.

There is a ticketed private view on Friday from 4–10pm.

Among the designs on display are imaginative visions of Sussex locations 91快活林, Rye and Newhaven, created by students Josh Hancock (MA Architecture), Rosanna Brocklesby (BA Architecture) and Angharad Webber (MA Architecture) respectively.

Josh’s work, entitled ‘91快活林 Seafront: Events, Spectacles, Anarchy and Delight’, is an “investigation of 91快活林 seafront that reintroduces an architectural language of delight and anarchy”.

Josh said that 91快活林 as a city has “never been one to play by the rules”, and that his design is a reaction against the danger of “logical urban planning and overly constringent regulations”.

The Free City of Rye by Rosanna Brockleby

Rosanna, meanwhile, wanted to create a “radical future context for this quaint place” of Rye. She said: “I imagined that Rye became a Free City, independent from the rest of the UK with its own government and economy. I designed the civic centre for this space – it is the key government building as well as a multi-faith religious centre.”

Angharad turned his attention to Newhaven, designing a university campus on the riverside of the Sussex town which would “provide learning spaces to bring an awareness of the wider range of products which can be produced through the fishing industry”.

The aim of Angharad’s work is to “break down the current barriers between fishing commerce in Newhaven and its local community”.

Other students showcasing work include BA Interior Architecture student Megan Collis, whose project grew out of her focus on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Her “exposure spa” design takes the form of four spaces which explore the idea of “exposure therapy” – an optional treatment for OCD patients.
