After developing his skills in our Culinary Arts Studio while studying International Hospitality Management BA(Hons), Andrew Selwyn was encouraged to do a placement year at the Runnymede on Thames Hotel and Spa in Egham.
On placement, Andrew was able to develop his employability skills by working in a number of areas across the hotel. He worked in the a la Carte restaurant and at private dinners, weddings, conferences and other events and celebrations. He also worked front-of-house, acted as duty manager, and learnt to use systems that are widely used in the hospitality industry.
After a brilliant year on placement, Andrew was surprised to get an email from the hotel inviting him back in for a chat. He was then offered a full-time job as assistant manager, a role that had been created specifically for him.
Now, as assistant manager of the food and beverage portfolio, Andrew thoroughly enjoys his work, which involves rotating daily through all the restaurants and food outlets, catering for meetings and events, and being on the duty manager rota.
