1 I'm interested in working at the university; is there a way I can be alerted to job opportunities?

There are two ways in which you can register your interest. They are both absolutely free and you can choose whether to subscribe or unsubscribe at any time.

1. . This enables you to schedule a job search and have new jobs that meet your requirements sent to your email address.
2. . This service enables you to subscribe to automatic updates via your web browser.

2 Why do I have to register to apply for a job?

Registration ensures that applicants are aware of the terms of use for the website and provides access to a personalised area of the website, 'My applications'. This enables you to manage your application with the university easily. Benefits include:

• your own online account which saves information such as previous employment, making applying for jobs easier.
• the website automatically saves your application as you work.
• you can set up job alerts to ensure you are the first to know when a new job is listed that meets your requirements.
• you will receive email notifications to let you know whether you have been successful.
• the system is environmentally friendly as it eliminates the need for printed application forms.

Confidentiality

All information is held securely and cannot be viewed by anyone at the university until you have submitted your application.

3 Why do I have to fill in an application form rather than just submitting my CV?

It is fairer and more objective as an application form collects consistent information in a uniform format from every applicant with the same questions being answered by each applicant. Applicants’ skills and experience can therefore be assessed more easily against the requirements of the role.

4 I've forgotten my log in details.

If you have forgotten your password you can reset it by following the password reset procedure. Simply follow these easy steps:

• Go to the .
• Enter your email address and click continue. You will then be emailed a link to continue to reset your password.
• Follow the link provided in the email, and enter and confirm your new password before clicking on 'Reset'.

Once you have completed the process and successfully reset your password you can log in using your email address and your new password.

Protect your account

• If using a public computer (such as in a library or internet cafe) always log off when you've finished using the site.
• Keep your passwords to yourself. Anyone who knows your password can access your account. Try not to write down your passwords.
• Do not use dictionary words, your name, your partner's name, your email address or other personal information that can be easily obtained or guessed.
• Change your password frequently.
• Avoid using the same password for accounts on different websites.

5 My login email address/password doesn't work.

In order to access your online account you need to supply your email address and password so that the system can authenticate and confirm your identity. Therefore your email address and password must exactly match the information we have held in our system.

The most common reasons for not being able to log in are because you have either entered your email address, password or both incorrectly. Check to make sure that the information you supplied is correct and remember that passwords are case sensitive.

If you know that your email address is correct and you simply can't remember your password, follow the procedure for resetting your password.

6 I have a new email address. How can I change my login?

If you have changed your email address and no longer have access to the email address you used to register, please email us at StaffRecruitment@brighton.ac.uk with details of your old and new email addresses.

7 I have submitted an application, but now my contact details have changed. How can I let you know?

Log in to the website, and click ‘My applications’ from the top toolbar, and then choose Update Contact Details from the left-hand menu. You will be asked to amend your contact details on this form, which will then update any previously submitted applications.

8 Are you able to send me an application form in the post?

We expect applicants to apply online. If this is not possible, please email the People Department at StaffRecruitment@brighton.ac.uk to discuss alternatives.

9 I have made some mistakes on my application form – how can I correct them?

Once you have submitted your application form online you cannot change any information, so please check your application thoroughly before submitting it.

10 Can I apply for more than one job on the same application form?

Not unless there are multiple post reference numbers given against one advert/job description. If this is not the case, you will need to complete an application form for each job. The website saves your personal details and employment history to make it easy to apply for more than one vacancy.

11 Who should I provide as my referees?

Your referees must be able to assess your suitability for the post. One of the nominated referees should be a manager from your current or most recent employment. If you have just completed full-time education, your course tutor or another academic staff member familiar with your work could be selected. Family members or personal friends should not be named as referees.

12 What time on the closing date does a post close?

The latest time you can submit an application online is 11.59pm on the closing date. After this time the job will disappear from the website and you will no longer be able to complete your application.

Postal application

If you are sending your application by post it will need to arrive on the closing date.

13 Can I submit a late application after a post has closed?

Applications received after 11.59pm on the closing date will not ordinarily be considered. If there are exceptional circumstances please email the People Department, preferably before the closing date, at StaffRecruitment@brighton.ac.uk.

14 I have lost the job description and/or further details for the job that I am being interviewed for; can I get another copy?

Go to the jobs 'Welcome' page and login to your account. Click 'My applications' to list your applications, then click the job title to bring up the advert, and job description as appropriate.

Offline application

If you applied offline, please email StaffRecruitment@brighton.ac.uk quoting the unique reference number of the job, requesting the details you need.

15 I have submitted my application form and have had an automated email response; should I also call to make sure that you have received it?

No, please accept the automated email response as confirmation that we have received your email.

16 It has been over a week since the closing date for the job I applied for; should I call to see if I have been shortlisted?

When the panel have reached an agreement, you will be sent an automatic email telling you whether you have been shortlisted or not.

However, some email providers mark such automatic emails as junk. If you haven’t heard from us, we strongly suggest that you check your junk mail folder, and add any emails which are captured by your junk filter to your safelist. If you have not received an email, please contact the People Department Recruitment team via StaffRecruitment@brighton.ac.uk with the reference number of the post.

Offline application

If you applied offline and did not provide an email address, then we will only contact you if you have been shortlisted for interview.

17 I have lost the directions of how to get to the correct campus for my interview.

18 Do you know what the start date of the job is?

No, unless otherwise stated in the further particulars for the post. The start date will be dependent on the successful candidate, their availability and notice period.

19 Does the university pay interview expenses?

No, we no longer reimburse interview expenses.

20 Does the university have a dress code?  

We do not have a formal dress code – although generally smart/casual would describe the university’s expectations. For your interview, we would encourage you to wear something you are comfortable in and believe is appropriate for the role and nature of the work for which you are applying.

There may be some roles for which a uniform will be required.
