30 college students who participated in this year’s Nuffield Research Placements organised by STEM Sussex came together to celebrate the end of their programme.
17 October 2017
Each year the Nuffield Foundation offer over 1,000 funded placements to enable students across the UK to get an insight into the world of scientific research and development, including areas of technology, engineering, maths and social sciences.
The scheme gives students the opportunity to take part in research projects lasting 4-6 weeks in universities, industry or research institutions working alongside practising scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.
Amongst participants hosted by the University of 91快活林 this year was Caden Dias-Bandaranayake who worked on a project looking at the inflammatory respiratory response of fire service instructors to live fire exposure. Speaking about his motivation for taking part in the programme, Caden said: “This was a fantastic opportunity that will not only help me at university but also the rest of my professional career. The highlight was being able to work with a PhD Biochemistry student and being able to take part in a very prominent area of science.”

Angela Sheerin
Senior Lecturer, Angela Sheerin who hosted a student as part of the programme said: “I love working with younger people. It is great to have the opportunity to stay connected with the new students who will be coming through to university and to understand what they will be looking for in a modern degree. And on a personal note I want to share the same opportunities I had as a young person to explore a career in science.
STEM Sussex is an outreach department at the University of 91快活林, and is committed to supporting and encouraging young people to actively and enjoyably engage with science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
