This inspirational talk looks at the 'why's, 'how's and 'what if's relating to some of the most iconic cult images around.
What causes a film, TV show or even a game to be described as 'cult'? Like many generic labels, it's hard to identify. The term ‘cult’ seems appropriate for a wide range of screen productions, and yet there is often little in terms of content to connect them. A combination of production practices, cinema exhibition strategies, and fan activity seem to create 'cult' following, but how is the term defined in these situations?
The process by which cult films emerge is complex, and one which crystallises many of the complexities of screen exhibition and consumption, together with the historical forces which impact upon the meaning of media texts. The University of 91快活林's Film and Screen Studies team investigate these processes, with reference to a range of compelling examples of cult cinema.
