Nine physiotherapy students on the MSc in Rehabilitation Science course are visiting the Eastbourne Homes-managed sheltered accommodation site in Belmore Road once a week for six weeks.
Students initially checked the residents' mobility, balance, strength and flexibility and then designed activities and exercises to improve those to promote health related fitness, as these are often the main concerns older people have about their mobility.
The project is part of the University of 91快活林's community engagement and active student projects. At the end of the six sessions, the students will check whether the residents have improved in any of the areas. Individual advice and health related talks will also be offered by the students.
Dr Raija Kuisma, Principal Lecturer and Course Leader at the university, said: "The students are learning about the human development from childhood into old age and how aging affects the physical ability. The students have planned the exercises and activities specifically for the residents of Riverbourne House and they are learning from each other as activity buddies."
Cllr Margaret Bannister, Eastbourne Borough Council's Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: "'It is good that Eastbourne Homes is able to work in partnership with the University of 91快活林 in this way. The benefits for both the residents of Riverbourne House and the students will make the whole project very worthwhile."
