Professor Andrew Lloyd

Interim Vice-Chancellor

Our Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Lloyd is responsible for leadership and management of the university, within the policies laid down by the Board of Governors of which he is an ex-officio member. His role involves line management for all University Executive Board members and the Dean of 91快活林 and Sussex Medical School.

Andrew joined the University of 91快活林 as a Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1989, having completed his PhD in biopharmaceutics our Department of Pharmacy. Over the next three and a half decades, Andrew held several roles at the university as an educator, researcher and administrator.  

He was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering in 2003, Dean of the College of Life, Health and Physical Sciences in 2014 and Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Operations) in July 2017. In 2019 he was appointed as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Operations), before being appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor in March 2024. He was asked by the Board of Governors to take on the role of Interim Vice-Chancellor from September 2024 while the process to identify and appoint a new Vice-Chancellor takes place.

Professor Andrew Lloyd

Andrew's primary research interests include the development and evaluation of novel materials for drug delivery and medical device applications. At present his research focuses on the development of novel contact lens materials to improve long-term on-eye comfort. His research has been funded by EPSRC, BBSRC, NHS, Royal Society, European Union and various international pharmaceutical and medical device companies. He has published over 300 articles and was formerly Consultant Editor for 'Drug Discovery Today' and 'Pharmaceutical Science & Technology Today' and co-edited of the undergraduate textbook ‘Drug Delivery and Targeting for Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Scientists’.

Outside the university, Andrew has held a number of voluntary educational positions including member of the Board of Governors of Seaford Head Community College (2011 – 2012); Chair of Seaford Head Academy Trust (2012 – 2015); Member of the Board of Trustees of the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation (2013 – 2016); Member of the Western Sussex Hospitals Governors (2015 – 2017) and Member of the Board of Trustees of Bede’s Independent School (2016 – 2021). 

Responsibilities

  • Leads the university planning process 
  • External commitments to represent the university and its profile
