Our Industrial Advisory Boards are teams of industry experts who contribute to the ongoing development of our courses, advising on content and helping ensure you develop the skills, knowledge and experience that is most valued by employers. We have boards in these subject areas:

Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Board

We work with a team of professional experts from leading organisations to ensure our civil engineering courses are relevant and responsive to employers’ needs.

Our Industrial Advisory Board members where you can ask any questions regarding the civil engineering profession. This is a great way to get a range of advice on your career, including how to find placements and employment.

Our Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Board team members are:

Chair - Nick Bean

Nick graduated from Liverpool University in 1995 with a BEng degree in Civil Engineering and obtained an MSC in Estuarine and Coastal Zone Management in 1999 from the University of Kent. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer (MICE).

Nick began working for West Sussex County Council Highways and then moved onto Posford Duvivier as a graduate coastal engineer, Binnie Black and Veatch to lead the GIS delivery team, CIRIA as a project manager, the Environment Agency as a coastal specialist, Mott MacDonald as the FCERM lead for coastal engineering. He has spent time working for London Underground and several local authorities.

Nick now works for 91快活林 & Hove City Council where he has the privilege of heading up the engineering team; his portfolio includes highway design and infrastructure, flood risk management, coast protection and street lighting.

Board member - Nigel Clifford

Nigel graduated from Manchester University in 1990 with a Civil Engineering MEng degree. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer (FICE) with over 35 years of continuous industry experience.

In his early years, Nigel enjoyed experience ranging from site labourer (during student summer holidays), design engineer and site engineer.  He progressed to becoming the client’s project manager/resident engineer on multi-million pound schemes in both the UK and overseas (Hong Kong and UAE). Now he has become more involved with the commercial and contractual aspects of construction projects. Nigel is currently a construction claims delay analyst, drawing on his experience in the assessment of construction programmes and project delays.

He has recently been involved with the Crossrail scheme as a delay analyst, as well as other infrastructure projects. Nigel regularly talks to students and makes presentations about all aspects of a career as a civil engineer.

Nigel was invited to become a member of the Industrial Advisory Board in 2015 and served as Chairman between 2019 and 2026.

Board member – Irene O’Riordan

Irene graduated from the University of Reading with a BSc in Human Geography in 2008, and started her career working as transport planner, primarily focusing on development planning. She was then a project manager and team leader for a traffic survey company before joining the spatial planning team in AECOM.

At AECOM Irene worked on large-scale, UK-wide transport and highway projects for clients such as Highways England and Transport for London. Whilst working full time, Irene completed an MSc in Transport Planning and Management from the University of Westminster in Autumn 2017. Irene is now a principal transport planner at Curtins working on a range of private and public sector projects including the White City masterplan for Imperial College and a million square foot mixed-use development in west London. Irene regularly works with the civil engineering teams to design and resolve highway design issues.

Irene joined the Industrial Advisory Board in 2018 to provide a transport/highways perspective and has been a guest lecturer at the University of 91快活林.

 is a leading consultancy with specialisms including civil and structural engineering; transport planning; environmental engineering; infrastructure; geotechnical; conservation and heritage; and principal designer.

Board member – Tristan Banks

Tristan graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 2008 with a Civil Engineering BEng(Hons) degree which included a sandwich year working with the contractor BAM Nuttall. In 2012 Tristan gained a Post Graduate Certificate at the University of Sussex and achieved Incorporated Engineer (IEng MICE) status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Following several years in consultancy and having worked though ICE Further Learning, Tristan achieved Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE) status in 2015.

Tristan worked with Mott MacDonald for five years, gaining experience in ports, bridges and heavy civil sectors. He was heavily involved with Crossrail projects at Paddington Station and also gained overseas experience in Bermuda and the USA.

Tristan joined HOP consulting in 2014 and is heavily involved in various port, marine, lock, coastal, seaside pier, river wall and bridge structures. He is now a board director and leads one of the Marine teams. Tristan is also an ICE Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE) and leads the company training programmes.

is a multi-disciplinary practice of consulting civil, structural and marine engineers based in Hove. Its expertise extends across all engineering disciplines, on all types of structural, civil and marine engineering projects – from inception to successful completion.

Board member – Ruth Chapman

Ruth comes from a public relations and communications background with a focus on stakeholder engagement for major construction projects. In 2006 she worked alongside Mackley Construction, Hollandia, POMA and HOP on the 91快活林 i360 project, and has since gone on to support multiple developers engage with stakeholders at the pre-planning stage as well as throughout delivery. Ruth has a special interest in STEM development amongst young people, improving the talent pool through diversity, equal opportunities and community engagement.

In 2024, Ruth moved to Mackley Construction where she hopes to motivate more people from diverse backgrounds to begin a career in engineering and construction.

Board member – Paul Mulvany BE MEngSc CEng MICE MAPM

Engineering Disciplines Manager

Paul graduated from University College Dublin and has more than three decades of experience in civil engineering and project management. Much of his career has been spent working in the UK water industry in various roles, and he now manages the engineering design teams in Southern Water.

He has also worked overseas for almost 10 years on consultancy, programme management, and construction management roles in countries including Romania, Iraq, Venezuela, Russia, Chile, Dominican Republic and UAE.

Paul is an ICE supervising civil engineer at Southern Water, which is appropriate as he did his own civil engineering graduate training there at the start of his career.

is the private utility company responsible for the public wastewater collection and treatment in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent, and for the public water supply and distribution in approximately half of this area.

Board member – John Clark 

Asset Management Advisory

John graduated from Liverpool John Moores University with a Civil Engineering BEng first class degree. He started his career by undertaking a placement year with Mouchel in 2008, before returning to his degree on a part-time basis and continuing to work in Mouchel’s water business. Mouchel has since been acquired by WSP where John established the Utilities Services Business.

In April 2023 John joined the KPMG Infrastructure Advisory Business and now works in business planning and financing projects related to infrastructure construction and maintenance.

John has worked on a number of high profile projects including the United Utilities Asset Management Plan (AMP5) capital programme, Southern Water AMP6 Developer Services offshoring team, High Speed 2 Utilities and Stations, and most recently PR24. John joined the University of 91快活林 Industrial Advisory Board in 2019 to promote the exciting opportunities that civil engineering offers to students.

Board member – Dan Rouse

Dan graduated from University of Plymouth with a degree in Civil Engineering. He has specific interests in water, public health and coastal engineering and is a Chartered Civil Engineer, registered Professional European Engineer and Career Mentor. He started his career working in consultancy, designing major pipelines, networks and pumping stations for UK water companies, and over the last 28 years has worked on a variety of water and environmental projects for clients nationally and globally.

Dan has worked in both client organisations and consultancy and has taken a wide range of projects through from needs identification to optioneering, outline and detailed design. He has worked under traditional professional services contracts and design and build joint ventures in the role of design manager.

Dan has worked with Mott MacDonald, a leading global engineering, development and management consultancy since 2012 and currently heads up the Southern Regional Portfolio for water sector work.  Based in Mott MacDonald’s 91快活林 office, Dan leads client relationships with major water companies and other clients and is responsible for leading and winning and delivering major framework tenders.

Dan is passionate about promoting careers in civil and environmental engineering locally and joined the University of 91快活林 Industrial Advisory Board in 2024 to help promote better links between industry and the university.

Board member – Yasmin Syid-Taylor

Yasmin graduated from the University of Leeds in 2008 with a Civil & Structural Engineering degree. She is a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager and Incorporated Engineer (C.WEM. IEng) with CIWEM and has 16 years of industry experience.

Yasmin began her career at MWH (now Stantec) as a graduate civil engineer, working on wastewater design projects in the joint venture 4D with Southern Water as the client. After leading the design of a site upgrade, she spent 10 months on site in construction before moving into clean water treatment, broadening her client base to include several new water utility companies.

Fast forward to now and Yasmin has been part of the Mott MacDonald team for 10 years, managing and delivering a diverse range of engineering projects to a range of clients. Projects include wastewater treatment, water supply treatment, flooding alleviation, highways drainage, substation drainage and infiltration mitigation in the format of feasibility studies, scoping design through to detailed design and construction through to handover, covering the technical, environmental, economic and social aspects of scheme delivery throughout the project life cycle.

Yasmin particularly enjoys the people management aspects of her role, on and off project work, catching up with her teams on a weekly basis and offering guidance and support to those around her. New to the University of 91快活林 Industrial Advisory Board, Yasmin looks forward to passing on her experience and providing inspiration and encouragement to those who seek it.

Board member – Colin Toovey MEng(Hons) CEng MICE

Associate Director & Principal Engineering Consultant
Environment-Resilience-Renewables

Colin has 20 years experience and is a Chartered Principal Civil and Environmental Engineer and associate director within the Environment-Resilience-Renewables group at Haskoning.

He leads the 91快活林 office team of some 25 staff, comprising engineering and environmental consultants and technical specialists. He has a broad range of experience in design coordination, feasibility studies, site inspections, engineering design and construction support for coastal, river and maritime structures both in the UK and overseas.

Notable projects he has worked on include Southsea and North Portsea Island Coastal Defence improvements (Portsmouth), Wandle Park River Restoration (Croydon) and Littlehaven Seawall (South Shields) public amenity schemes, and flood defence inspections and advice in Azerbaijan and Colombia, as well as delivering feasibility studies in Singapore, Trinidad, Bahrain and Indonesia.

He has also designed fish passes, flood alleviation schemes, trash screens and timber structures. Colin is also an ICE Supervising Civil Engineer and guide trainees towards Chartership as well as being on the Kent & East Sussex branch committee.

Board member – Andrew Sherlock BEng(Hons) CEng FIStructE

Director

Andrew is a board director at Waterman Structures, responsible for technical excellence across the company. A graduate of the University of Sheffield, Andrew has over three decades of experience in civil and structural engineering, including senior roles in the power and energy sectors and extensive international project leadership.

Since rejoining Waterman Structures in London in 1998, he has led the design of major commercial, residential and retail developments, including landmark projects such as One Sherwood Street (Piccadilly Lights), Marble Arch Place and Canada Water.

Andrew is recognised for his expertise in delivering complex, high-profile projects and driving innovation in structural engineering.

Board member - Paul Alexander

Chief of Staff and Director of Technical Planning & Engineering Excellence (CCS)

Paul has more than 20 years of experience across the automotive, power generation and industrial engineering sectors.

Paul graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and later completed a PhD at 91快活林 University focused on mixture preparation for gasoline direct-injection engines sponsored by Ricardo Consulting Engineers.

He has spent much of his career at Cummins, specialising in the design and manufacture of products for diesel engines, electric vehicles and power generation.

His earlier career focused on the design of HHP gas and diesel-powered generators for continuous, prime and standby applications in global markets and subsequently in the design of turbocharger technologies for diesel and gas engines. During his career, he has held roles in applied mechanics, product development, application engineering and technical sales.

Paul has travelled extensively to support major global HD truck OEM customers, delivering leading-edge turbocharger technology solutions to enable next-generation fuel economy and low-emissions performance in line with future legislation.

His current role spans several areas, including serving as Global Chief of Staff for the Cummins Components and Software (CCS) Engineering function, and as Director of Technical Planning and Engineering Excellence.

He is also responsible for managing the pipeline of next-generation talent across all CCS global locations. He is passionate about creating an environment where the next generation of engineers and scientists can thrive and conceptualise the products of the future from undergraduates to subject matter experts.

Board member - Professor Andy Atkins (PhD, MEng/BSc, FIET, FIMechE)

Andy is a career innovator with a track record of delivering business impact through the development of complex technical solutions from TRL 0 to TRL 9 in a variety of technical disciplines across diverse market sectors.

In recent years he has followed his interests in energy and environmental impact but during his career he has worked in many fields, eg: electrical transmission systems, cryogenic medical devices, as well as electrical and novel ICE drives for transport systems and diverse energy storage systems.

Andy has a portfolio of over 50 patent families and has won awards from the IMechE for innovative high speed magnetic design for KERs systems and from the Japanese Manufacturing institute on my work on lean factory design and delivery for Siemens. He is regularly sought by innovative companies to provide IP and business direction from a technical perspective.

Board member - Tony Bhogal

Tony Bhogal has a BSc(Hons) in Mining Engineering and was a British Coal Scholar. Following the demise of the coal industry he helped establish a family business remanufacturing automotive components. He has over 35 years of experience in remanufacturing starter motors, alternators, automatic and manual transmissions, diesel pumps and injectors and other engine components.

His which was established in 1986 is the largest independent remanufacturer and supplier of rotating electrics in the UK with a capacity of over 100,000 units per year.

He also established a consultancy, focussing on remanufacturing, circular economy and procurement. Tony is an advisor to various organisations, companies, governments and city councils regarding value retention processes including remanufacturing and reuse. Recently, he supported the position paper regarding auto parts remanufacturing published by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd (SMMT). He is currently carrying out doctorate research into reuse and remanufacture of medical devices and equipment in collaboration with 91快活林 University and has a MSc in Real Estate.

Board member – Danny Hoyle

Danny has decades of experience in the telecommunications sector, having held technical commercial roles in distribution, specialist manufacture, towers and vendor specific companies.

Initially beginning his career as a fibre optics engineer holding City & Guilds qualifications, Danny moved into commercial activities, distributing some of the world’s market-leading fibre optic cables and associated products across Europe and Africa.

Moving on to work for a leading specialist fibre optics company in Switzerland, Danny was a key account manager looking after the major UK network operators and secured multi-million, multi-year, fibre optics contracts with Vodafone and Telefonica (now VMO2) for their 4G and then 5G deployments. In fact, if you drive along any motor way in the UK and see a telecoms tower – there’s a very high chance it has fibre optics supplied by Danny! He also worked very closely with Telefonica, helping design their internal fibre optic cabling solution for small cell 5G street work deployments.

Most recently he has moved into the wireless space, particularly with the advent of 5G. Wireless private networks is now where he applies his vast industry knowledge, working for Belgian software company Accelleran.

Board member - Matthew Kent BA (HONS) DIPARCH, PG DIP RIBA MAPM

Project and Design Manager

Matthew graduated from Birmingham School of Architecture in 1995 with a BA (Hons) in Architecture and went on to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture at Oxford Brookes University in 2003. He subsequently achieved chartered status after completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Law and Management at 91快活林 University in 2009. He is a Chartered Architect, a Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and 91快活林 University Alumni.

Matthew began his career as an Architectural Technologist with Bechtel Engineering and worked within the High Speed 1 (HS1) Architectural Design Team, supporting the design of St Pancras, Stratford and Ebbsfleet International Railway Stations. He later joined Tony Meadows Associates, where he worked specifically within the heavy rail sector and helped develop feasibility studies for London Underground and Network Rail.

A change in career saw Matthew venture into the Healthcare sector with lead design roles at Nightingale Associates and Frankham Consultancy Group. His career has also included a role as Lead Project Engineer, overseeing design quality and delivery with the Capital Development Team at Gatwick Airport.

Matthew now works for Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK, where he is a Project and Design Manager. His recent clients have included the Environment Agency through the delivery of its Thames Estuary Asset Management Programme (TEAM2100). He is currently based at the University of Sussex, managing the delivery of a Health & Wellbeing Centre and new halls of residence accommodation.

Board member - Dave Lock

Founding Engineer

Dave graduated in 1999 with a BEng (Hons) in Polymer Engineering. He has over 25 years of industry experience in mechanical engineering and physical product development.

Dave began his career as a Polymer Design Engineer at a Co-Extrusion die head manufacturing company, where his work included the design of multi-layer extrusion dies and patented polymer products. He then moved to Ram Pumps as Design Engineer, progressing to Senior Design Engineer and Engineering Manager, where he led delivery of bespoke high-pressure pumping systems for the oil and gas industry on international projects in Siberia, Afghanistan and Australia. He subsequently joined Pall Corporation as Senior Engineer of Applications & Product Development, working across nuclear, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and oil and gas filtration vessels.

In 2010 Dave founded Cast Iron CAD, a 91快活林 & Hove-based engineering practice specialising in physical product development from concept through Design for Manufacture (DFM) and into supply-chain placement. Over 15 years at Cast Iron CAD he has led design and manufacturing consultations on more than 280 products across medical devices, industrial printers, IoT devices and consumer goods, with a particular focus on scalable, patentable product solutions for SMEs.

Dave joined the Engineering Industrial Advisory Board in 2022 to bring industry perspective on physical product development, manufacturing and commercialisation. He has a particular interest in the bridge between engineering design and commercial viability, and in providing insight into careers in SME and freelance contracting engineering for students considering alternatives to large-organisation employment.

Cast Iron CAD

provides end-to-end product design, engineering and manufacturing support, helping clients take physical products from concept through to production and delivery.

Based in 91快活林 & Hove, it works with SMEs, funded innovators and established manufacturers across consumer, industrial and bespoke applications. Cast Iron CAD also operates two supporting practices: , a structured methodology and free assessment tool for evaluating early-stage product viability; and , specialising in product engineering for Amazon-marketplace sellers.

Board member – Tony Mace

Tony works in the engineering and construction directorate of Southern Water Services Ltd on electrical instrumentation control automation (EICA) design for clean and wastewater capital works engineering projects. He also looks after various associated company engineering standards, works on technical solutions with other disciplines and operational areas of the business and is involved with mentoring junior engineers.

After starting his career as an apprentice industrial electrician in the late 1970s, Tony moved into the water industry in the 1980s, taking on increasingly technical roles, becoming incorporated engineer and subsequently chartered engineer within South East Water and then moving to Southern Water, where he holds his second role now as a principal engineer.

Tony joined the Engineering Industrial Advisory Board in 2017, primarily to help link industry to the University of 91快活林 with a two-way process to tap into the skills and knowledge of each other’s organisations. With the IET being the professional institute for the EICA discipline, the university has developed a MPD scheme for graduates with our mechanical colleagues and the IMechE to provide an IET- and IMechE-accredited graduate scheme.

Southern Water’s purpose is to provide water for life. It is committed to making a positive impact for the good of its customers and communities and provide essential services to 2.6 million water customers and 4.7 million wastewater customers across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Board member - Andy Marshal

Lead Design Engineer

Andrew graduated from the University of 91快活林 in 2010 with a First Class (Hons) BSc in Product Design.

Since then, he has built his career as a mechanical design engineer, working both in-house and on a freelance basis across a variety of industries, from extreme automotive design to health and hygiene products. His problem-solving approach to design has contributed to the development of multiple patented ideas and successful products brought to market.

In his current role as Lead Design Engineer, he manages a team of engineers to deliver medtech solutions, with a strong emphasis on empathetic, user-centred design.

Over the years, Andrew has also started and grown two ecommerce companies, guiding them through to successful exit. Along the way, he has gained hands-on experience across the full product lifecycle, from early concept through to production.

Among his most notable work, Andrew designed the expedition sledge for Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ latest venture, as well as stunt vehicles for Warner Bros.

Board member - Cormac O'Prey

Director

An experienced medical product and technology development engineer and project manager, Cormac has been working in Cambridge consultancy since 2000. In 2017 Cormac founded Kestrel Technology Consulting and continues to develop innovative medical solutions.

Cormac has also chaired the committee for BS8887 / ISO8887 national and global standards on design for Manufacture, Assembly, and End of Life Processing since 2024 and is Chair of the subcommittee Sustainable Design of Medical Devices. The group collaborates with industry to develop practical solutions to reduce healthcare’s significant environmental footprint.

In 2023 Cormac joined US ASTM E60.42 and ASTM E60.13 groups on Designing for Recyclability of Single-Use Medical Products and Packaging, and represents the UK on the EU-based CEN/TC 406 committee on eco-design for the mechanical sector.

In 2025, Cormac started a 4 year PhD research project with University of 91快活林 into standards and guidelines for sustainable design in medical equipment.

Gordan has over 25-years working in thermal generation, and more recently with BESS in Ireland and Germany - having joined the industry as a graduate trainee in 2001. During that time, he has worked in a variety of operational, maintenance, engineering and leadership positions, both within the UK and internationally.
